Jessica Gerrity is a New Zealander who is a member of the Saitama Prefecture Urawa Komaba Kyudojo.
We interviewed her about her experiences practicing kyudo.

When did you first hear about kyudo?

About 12 years ago, I went to a park in Omiya for cherry blossom viewing and I happened upon a kyudojo and saw they were practicing.
I had no idea what it was they were doing but I stood transfixed for a while watching as it was so calming. Other than aikido and judo I had no knowledge of Japanese martial arts, however when I searched Japanese archery, the word kyudo came up and it was from then I became interested to learn.

How did you end up starting kyudo?

From a while back I wanted to start but found myself having kids and being caught up with parenting and work etc and just couldn’t get the time to properly look for a beginners class in my area. One day, I had a radio job and the MC had invited a few of his kyudo friends to have a cup of tea after the radio show had finished. By chance, I was kindly introduced to a beginners course in my city and so I joined. After the course ended I had a period of time back in New Zealand where I wasn’t practising. During that time, by chance, I was invited to watch practise at the local kyudo club in Auckland. I met the head of the Kyudo Federation of New Zealand who later introduced me to the Urawa Komaba dojo and I was fortunate enough to meet Sakamoto sensei who has provided me with continued support and guidance.

What is a regular practice like for you?

Initially I could only manage practice once a week, however I increased that to between two to four times a week. I stretch with my bow: subiki, then slowly practise with the makiwara, afterwich I enter the shooting area and perform taihai. After this I continue on with rissha and aim to shoot twenty to thirty arrows. Continuing this method of practice has helped me to pass the shodan examination which I took recently. In saying that there is still a mountain of things I need to work on! So I’ll continue on under the guidance of Sakamoto sensei and the other dojo members.

From a non Japanese point of view, what do you think about kyudo and it’s benefits?

Well go be honest there are numerous benefits and I’m not sure where to start! I think the main reason is that you can continue for your whole life, and not just that! It’s possible to start as a middle aged person such as myself. I think thats just amazing. I can’t think of a sport thats as physically dynamic as kyudo that you start later in life and continue forever. I have trouble imaging octagenarians having a good old game of rugby to be honest! At the Komaba dojo theres a sensei who at the ripe old age of 92 is still fit as a flea and practices several times a week. When we meet I really feel that kyudo is an amazing and powerful martial art. There are also several members who practice together regularly with their children at our dojo. I think having families practice kyudo together is just really wonderful. Other benefits from having started kyudo include learning how to dress myself in hakama and wearing tabi. Also having the opportunity to be immersed in a traditional martial art and to learn and use the etiquette involved. I feel an improvement in my overall health and daily welbeing too. Oh, not to mention I’ve learnt alot of new Japanese words!

Tell us the reasons you feel glad you started kyudo.

Currently I’m a tv personality, a tourism ambassador for Saitama Prefecture and a mother of three children. Taking on work and parenting means my lifestyle is quite rushed and hectic, juggling many things at once. When I go to the dojo for practice however, it’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s so calm and quiet. With only myself and my bow and the target, I can concentrate on one thing and this aspect has been so positive for me. It’s really calmed me in a physical and spiritual sense which I think has had a positive impact on my daily life. I think starting kyudo has helped me to be more balanced person and in effect a better mother. When I’m practicing kyudo I feel tokimeki (happiness)! Thanks to kyudo I’ve been able to meet so many wonderful people. Getting to know an older generation of kyudo practitioners has been really eye opening. Their knowledge and experiences are so interesting and valuable to me. I really appreciate being able to find a dojo which has the same values and beliefs as me, and having teachers and members who accept me for who I am.

What are your goals for the future?

○With the guidance of my teacher I’d like to work towards taking further examinations and try to aim for a higher dan.
○Once my children get a bit bigger, I’d like to take part in more dojo events.
○If I get a chance I’d like to be involved in the promotion of kyudo in anyway I can.
○I’d like to help out the NZ Kyudo Federation by finding them equipment. I’d like to improve my overall technique and increase my target hit rate!
